A Street in Bronzeville
Gwendolyn Brooks · 1945 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Contemporary
In a kitchenette building on the South Side a dream has trouble getting up against onion fumes and yesterday's garbage ripening in the hall. A woman addresses the children she did not have, a girl envies the rough ones in the back alley, Satin-Legs Smith dresses on Sunday in the only argument he owns, and a sonnet sequence speaks for Black soldiers who fought abroad and came home to the same street. Her first book.
