Mr Cogito
Forty poems follow a fastidious and wholly unheroic figure named for Descartes' verb: he studies his face in the mirror and finds his forebears looking back out of it, takes the measure of his two mismatched legs, and walks about with a pearl in his shoe to keep himself from contentment. The manner is dry, exact and pointedly unlyrical, withholding consolation while insisting that certain distinctions still have to be held. Written under Gierek's Poland, and its closing charge to be faithful was copied out and passed hand to hand through the opposition years.
