The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born

Ayi Kwei Armah · 1968 CE · Novel · West African · Contemporary

A railway clerk takes no bribes, which his wife and her mother read as a failure of nerve rather than of opportunity, and he walks each day past banisters, latrines and dustbins that the city has polished to a shine with its own filth. His old schoolmate Koomson is a party man now, with a boat and a refrigerator and a white-shod wife, and he comes to dinner in a way that makes the difference between the two of them a matter of smell. Written as Nkrumah's government fell, and the book that set the terms for a generation of African fiction about what the flag actually delivered.
