The Book of Psalms

Hebrew scripture · c. 400 BCE · Scripture · Judeo-Christian · Ancient

A hundred and fifty temple songs: complaints from men hunted by enemies and by their own consciences, thanksgivings for rescue, coronation hymns, and one long alphabetical praise of the law. The voice swings without warning from accusing God of sleeping through a massacre to calling him a shepherd who spreads a table in the presence of enemies, and the collection keeps both. Compiled over centuries and ascribed to David, whose harp-playing at Saul's court the historical books record, it became the standing hymnbook of synagogue and church.
