Averno

Louise Glück · 2006 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Contemporary

A girl taken underground argues with the terms of her return across a sequence that also holds a burned field, a woman ageing in a New England town, and a mother who will not let a daughter go. The crater lake the Romans took for the mouth of the underworld gives the book its name and its cold weather. Written late, it is the most taught of Glück's collections and the clearest case of the myth-plus-autobiography method the 2020 Nobel citation singled out.
