Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade
Three strands are plaited together: French officers' letters and dispatches from the invasion of 1830, the recorded voices of Algerian women who fought or survived the war of independence, and a girl walked to a French school by her father in a coastal village. The archive is read against itself, because the conquerors wrote everything down and the conquered were preserved only where someone came to ask. First of the Algerian Quartet.
