So Vast the Prison

Assia Djebar · 1995 CE · Novel · Maghrebi · Contemporary

A woman in a wordless marriage falls into an affair conducted almost entirely by looking, and the telling of it opens out into two thousand years of erased writing, including a bilingual inscription at Dougga whose Berber half nobody living could read. A third movement follows a crew of women filming in the mountains above Cherchell, recording what their grandmothers were never asked. Third of the Algerian Quartet, and the one that puts a camera where the archive failed.
