River of Fire

Qurratulain Hyder · 1959 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary

Gautam Nilambar leaves a forest hermitage for the Magadha of the fourth century before the common era, and a handful of names — his own, Champa's, Kamal's, later an Englishman called Cyril — surface again under the Sultanate, again in the last century of Company and Raj, and again among students of the 1930s who will be divided by 1947. Nothing carries across but the names and the river, and each age is certain its own arrangements are the permanent ones. Hyder's novel is the one most often named when the modern Urdu canon is listed, and she made her own English version of it forty years later.
