In the Skin of a Lion
Patrick Lewis comes down from the Ontario bush into a Toronto being built by Macedonian and Finnish labourers who appear nowhere in its records — the viaduct, the water tunnel driven out under the lake, the men who fall from both. Hired to find a millionaire who has vanished, he takes up in turn with two women who knew the man. Ondaatje's epigraph from Gilgamesh gives the book its title and its argument about who gets written down.
