Sentimental Education

Gustave Flaubert · 1869 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

Frédéric Moreau, a law student travelling home by river steamer, sees Madame Arnoux on deck and arranges the next twenty-five years of his life around her. Inheritance, Paris salons, two other women and the revolution of 1848 pass through while he waits for a feeling to turn into an event. Flaubert set out to write the moral history of his generation and gave it a hero who never quite acts.
