Delta Wedding

Eudora Welty · 1946 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

In September 1923 a nine-year-old motherless cousin rides the Yellow Dog down into the Mississippi Delta to Shellmound, where the Fairchilds are marrying their second daughter to the plantation overseer and nobody has a spare minute to explain any of it to her. Dabney is seventeen and marrying beneath the family, her mother Ellen is pregnant again and holding the household together by not saying aloud what she sees, and the uncle they all worship stayed out on a railway trestle to free a trapped child while the train came on. Eudora Welty picked the one year of the period she could find with no flood and no war in it, so that nothing outside the family could be blamed for what goes on inside it.
