The Years

Virginia Woolf · 1937 CE · Novel · English · Modernist

Dated chapters follow the Pargiters from 1880, when Colonel Abel's wife is slow about dying and his daughters sit in the drawing room waiting for the kettle to boil, through half a century of lodgings, deaths, marriages and air raids. Each section opens with the weather moving over the whole of England before it settles on one London street; the last is headed only Present Day, and gathers the surviving cousins at a party. Conceived as an essay-novel whose argument was split off to become Three Guineas, it was the only one of her books to be a bestseller in her lifetime.
