Night and Day
Katharine Hilbery pours tea for her mother's literary callers and helps with an endless life of her grandfather, the great poet, while doing mathematics in secret upstairs. A solicitor with no money, a suffrage worker who loves him, and the poet-cousin she has half agreed to marry cross and recross her Chelsea drawing room. Woolf's second book is also her most conventional, an Edwardian courtship comedy written while she was already devising the methods that would break with it.
