Home of the Gentry

Ivan Turgenev · 1859 CE · Novel · Russian · Victorian

A landowner comes back from Paris to the family house after his wife's infidelity, intending to farm, expect nothing and hear no music, and finds a devout young cousin who reads his silences correctly. A paragraph in a French newspaper appears to settle his position, and the two of them begin to speak as though the future were theirs. The most loved of Turgenev's books in his own lifetime, and the only one the Slavophiles were willing to claim.
