A Month in the Country

Ivan Turgenev · 1855 CE · Play · Russian · Victorian

The wife of a country landowner, bored and long adored by a family friend who has never spoken, works out that she wants the student engaged to tutor her son, and that her seventeen-year-old ward wants him too. A summer of talk on the terrace does the work of a plot, with the local doctor brokering a marriage on the side and nobody naming the thing that matters. Written in exile abroad and neglected for half a century, until Stanislavsky's 1909 Moscow Art Theatre production established it as the drama of mood standing directly behind Chekhov.
