Uncle Vanya

Anton Chekhov · 1899 CE · Play · Russian · Victorian

A retired professor and his young second wife come to live on the country estate that has been worked for twenty-five years to pay his salary, and the whole household reorganises itself around his gout and his hours. The brother-in-law who kept the accounts has worked out that the man he gave his life to is a fraud, the doctor who plants forests drinks and is loved by the wrong woman, and nobody says the sentence that would change anything. Chekhov rebuilt it from his failed 1889 play The Wood Demon, cutting away the melodrama and leaving the disappointment.
