The Duel
In a shabby Black Sea town a civil servant who has stopped going to his office wants to be rid of the woman he brought there and cannot bring himself to say so, borrowing from the army doctor to fund an escape to Petersburg. A visiting zoologist, applying natural selection to his neighbours, concludes that such a man is a danger to the species and ought to be removed from it. Chekhov's longest story, written as he was breaking with Tolstoy's doctrine of non-resistance, and it hands the Darwinist the better arguments.
