A Personal Matter
Bird is twenty-seven, teaches at a cram school, keeps a map of Africa he has no intention of using, and is told at the hospital that his newborn son has a brain hernia and will be a vegetable if the surgeons keep him alive. He spends the days that follow drinking at a widowed girlfriend's flat and arranging with a doctor to feed the baby sugar water instead of milk. Ōe's son Hikari had been born with a skull defect the year before.
