The Silent Cry

Kenzaburō Ōe · 1967 CE · Novel · Japanese · Contemporary

Mitsusaburo, blind in one eye and with a friend just dead by his own hand, follows his younger brother back to the Shikoku valley the family came from. The brother sells the ancestral storehouse to the Korean who now owns the supermarket and drills the village boys into a football team, while the two argue over what their great-grandfather's brother did in the rising of 1860. The Swedish Academy pointed to it as the book that established him.
