Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids
Fifteen boys from a reformatory are marched out of the burning cities into a mountain village that takes them only under orders. When an animal sickness turns into something worse the villagers block the valley road and go, leaving the boys alone with the empty houses, a Korean boy, a deserter and a girl. Ōe wrote it at twenty-three, inventing the Shikoku forest valley he returned to for forty years.
