The Day He Himself Shall Wipe My Tears Away

Kenzaburō Ōe · 1972 CE · Short Story · Japanese · Contemporary

A man in a hospital bed, wearing underwater goggles fitted with green cellophane, dictates to the woman he calls his acting executor the history of a certain party: his father, who in August 1945 sat in a forest storehouse planning to seize an airfield and die singing the Emperor's anthem. His mother, listening next door, denies every fact of it. Written into the emperor-worship that came back around Mishima's suicide two years earlier.
