An Echo of Heaven
Marie Kuraki's two sons, the elder of them disabled, go into the sea together off a beach south of Tokyo, and she moves afterwards through one consolation after another: a study group, a mountain sect, a Mexican director, at last a farming commune in California whose workers begin to call her a saint. A writer who knew her assembles the account from those who were there. Ōe's most direct treatment of the appetite for the sacred in a secular life.
