Scenes of Clerical Life
Three tales out of the Midlands parishes of an earlier generation: a dull curate whose congregation cannot see what his wife is costing him, an old vicar with an Italian ward and a buried grief, and a lawyer's wife driven to drink by her husband and steadied by an Evangelical preacher. The clergy are handled as men with rent and sorrow rather than as types, which was the point. Published anonymously in Blackwood's, and Dickens wrote to the unknown author to say he was certain she was a woman.
