The Lifted Veil
George Eliot · 1859 CE · Short Story · English · Victorian
A sickly, unloved second son discovers after an illness that other people's thoughts are audible to him, and that he has seen in advance an evening in Prague he has never visited. Every mind lies open except that of the cold fair young woman his brother is engaged to, and it is precisely her opacity that he wants. Eliot's only supernatural fiction, written in the months after her first novel and kept out of the collected editions for years.
