Adam Bede
In a Midlands parish at the end of the eighteenth century, a village carpenter of exact conscience loves the farmer's pretty niece, who is meanwhile being noticed by the young squire. A Methodist preacher — a woman who works in a mill and speaks in the open air — is the one person in the book who sees what is coming. Eliot's first full-length novel, built out of a story her aunt had told her about visiting a girl condemned at the assizes.
