Atonement

Ian McEwan · 2001 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

On a hot day in 1935 the thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis, an aspiring writer, misreads a scene between her sister Cecilia and the housekeeper's son Robbie Turner and makes an accusation that cannot be taken back. The story follows Robbie to the retreat to Dunkirk and Briony into wartime nursing. The closing section reframes everything before it and made the book a standard text on fiction's claims to truth.
