Black Dogs

Ian McEwan · 1992 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

An orphan who has spent his life adopting other people's parents sets out to write his mother-in-law's memoir, and keeps returning to her account of a 1946 honeymoon walk on a limestone causse in Languedoc, where two starved dogs came up the path towards her. Her husband, a rationalist and a lifelong communist, has a different explanation for everything she took from that afternoon. Their argument runs from the fall of the Berlin Wall back to the war, and is meant to carry the century's.
