Amsterdam

Ian McEwan · 1998 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

Two old friends meet at the crematorium for a woman they both loved, who died quickly and without her mind, and each extracts from the other a promise about what to do should the same thing start to happen to him. One is a composer racing to finish a symphony commissioned for the millennium; the other edits a failing broadsheet and has just been handed photographs of a cabinet minister that would sell it out of trouble. The Booker went to it in 1998, over objections that it was the slightest book on the list.
