Girls at War
Thirteen stories written across twenty years and closing on Biafra, where a militia girl who searched a civil servant's car at a checkpoint in the confident early months turns up again once the relief lorries and the price of a tin of milk have rearranged everybody. Elsewhere a madman takes a bathing man's clothes and walks into town wearing them, and a Lagos clerk goes back to a village that expects its share of the salary. The war stories were written while Achebe was travelling abroad on Biafra's behalf, and they are among the few first-hand fictions from that side of it.
