No Longer at Ease

Chinua Achebe · 1960 CE · Novel · Nigerian · Contemporary

Obi Okonkwo, sent to England on a loan raised by his village union and back in Lagos as a senior civil servant, is expected to repay the scholarship, keep a car, support his parents and marry inside rules that his Christian father and his ancestors enforce from opposite directions. The woman he wants is osu, dedicated to a shrine generations back, and the men who call at his flat with envelopes are patient. Achebe opens in the courtroom and then goes back to account for how a young man of obvious promise got there.
