The Crucible

Arthur Miller · 1953 CE · Play · Modern / American · Contemporary

Girls found dancing in the woods outside Salem in 1692 fall sick, and rather than take a whipping they start naming the women whose spirits came to them. A court convenes to hear spectral evidence, land grudges and old debts feed the docket, and a farmer who slept with his young servant must decide what he is prepared to admit in public in order to stop her. Miller went to the Salem records while the House committee was taking names in Washington, and nobody missed the parallel.
