The Mayor of Zalamea

Calderón de la Barca · 1651 CE · Play · Spanish · Renaissance

A rich farmer in an Extremaduran town has troops quartered on him on their way to Portugal, and puts his daughter up in the loft out of the way of the captain who holds the billet. The captain finds the stair, and within the week the farmer is elected mayor, holding a magistrate's staff over a soldier who answers to a different court. Calderón rebuilt an earlier play of the same title, attributed to Lope, and moved the peasant to the moral centre of it.
