The Physician of His Honour

Calderón de la Barca · c. 1637 CE · Play · Spanish · Renaissance

A Seville gentleman comes home to find the king's brother in his house and his wife's composure a shade too well managed. Nothing has happened and nothing needs to have: the code he lives by requires only that a doubt exist, and he sets about a remedy in private while addressing her throughout with perfect courtesy. Whether Calderón is endorsing the honour code or exhibiting it has divided readers since the eighteenth century.
