The Great Theatre of the World
The Author calls up the World and commissions a performance from it; the World hands out the costumes and the props, and the parts — King, Beauty, Rich Man, Labourer, Beggar, and a soul that begs not to be born — go on with no rehearsal and one line of direction. When the Author calls again, each performer gives the costume back and is asked how the part was carried. A one-act piece for the Corpus Christi carts, and the best known of Calderón's eighty autos sacramentales.
