The Constant Prince

Calderón de la Barca · 1629 CE · Play · Spanish · Renaissance

A Portuguese expedition against Tangier fails and the king's brother is taken and held at Fez. Lisbon offers the city of Ceuta for his release, and the captive forbids the exchange from his cell, arguing that a Christian town cannot be traded for one man's body while he still has a body left to spend. Grotowski built his 1965 production on it and made the part the standing example of what he meant by the actor's total act.
