The Phantom Lady

Calderón de la Barca · c. 1629 CE · Play · Spanish · Renaissance

A young widow in Madrid, kept veiled and indoors by two brothers guarding the family's honour, works out that the glazed cabinet in her rooms is a door into the guest chamber where their friend is lodged. She takes to leaving him letters and shifting his belongings about, and lets his servant persuade him the house has a spirit in it. The most revived of the cape-and-sword comedies, and the one that makes the shutting-up of women its actual subject.
