The Dog in the Manger
Diana, Countess of Belflor, wants her secretary Teodoro and cannot have him without ruining herself, so she alternates between encouraging him and destroying every match he makes elsewhere. Teodoro and his servant Tristán start looking for a way out of a courtship nobody is allowed to name. The title comes from the proverb about the dog that neither eats nor lets others eat.
