Peribáñez
Lope de Vega · 1614 CE · Play · Spanish · Renaissance
A prosperous farmer of Ocaña marries Casilda, and the knight-commander who governs the town sees her at the wedding and cannot let it go. He commissions Peribáñez a captain and sends him off to the king's war, which clears the house. Lope's most direct claim that honour is not a possession of rank, built from a popular ballad rather than from a chronicle.
