Two Leaves and a Bud
Mulk Raj Anand · 1937 CE · Novel · Indian · Modernist
Gangu, a Punjabi peasant who has lost his land to a moneylender, is recruited to an Assam tea estate on the promise of a plot of his own, and finds a labour line he cannot legally leave. The English assistant manager hunts pig and women with the same appetite, and the estate doctor's sympathy stops well short of his job. Banned in India for its picture of the planter Raj.
