The Rice-Sprout Song
In a Yangtze delta village a few years after land reform, the farmer Gold Root's wife comes home from domestic service in Shanghai to a household eating gruel thinned with water and to a cadre planning a New Year celebration for a visiting film writer. The pork and cakes the village is required to contribute have to be found somewhere, and there is nowhere. Chang wrote it in Hong Kong after leaving the mainland, published the English version first, and the book stayed unavailable in China for the next fifty years.
