The Golden Cangue
Cao Qiqiao, a sesame-oil shopkeeper's daughter married into the wealthy Jiang household as wife to an invalid son who cannot leave his bed, spends thirty years being condescended to by servants and sisters-in-law while she waits for the estate to be divided. What she is owed she does eventually get, and by then the only people still within her reach are her own son and daughter. C. T. Hsia called it the greatest novella in modern Chinese literature; Chang rewrote it twice in English and never improved it.
