Fortunata and Jacinta
The heir to a Madrid drapery marries his cousin Jacinta, who cannot give him a child, and keeps returning to Fortunata, a woman of the tenements who can. Across four parts the two circle each other through shops, convents, sickrooms and staircases until each begins to want what the other has. Galdós's largest book is the fullest portrait of nineteenth-century Madrid anyone wrote, and the Spanish answer to Balzac's method of recurring characters.
