Howards End

E. M. Forster · 1910 CE · Novel · English · Modernist

The Schlegel sisters live on unearned income and go to concerts; the Wilcoxes make their money in West Africa and do not care for talk; Leonard Bast, an insurance clerk reading Ruskin at night, is given advice by both. Margaret's friendship with the first Mrs Wilcox turns on a farmhouse in Hertfordshire that the family assumes is theirs to dispose of. Only connect the prose and the passion, says the epigraph, and the book tests how far England will let anyone do it.
