Where Angels Fear to Tread
Lilia Herriton, a widow the Sawston family has been glad to see the back of, goes to Tuscany with a chaperone and marries the son of a dentist in Monteriano; her late husband's mother sends emissaries to retrieve her, and later to retrieve something else. The English party treat the small hill town as a spectacle and are handled by it in turn, at the opera and at the tower. Forster's first, its title lifted from Pope's Essay on Criticism, which the index does not yet hold.
