Daisy Miller
At a Swiss hotel a young American named Winterbourne meets a rich girl from Schenectady who talks to strangers, walks out alone with men, and cannot see why the American colony in Rome should mind. He follows her to Rome, half in love and unable to decide whether she is innocent or fast, while his aunt's set closes its doors. The story made James famous on two continents and began an argument about the American girl that ran a generation.
