The Aspern Papers

Henry James · 1888 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Victorian

An unnamed editor comes to Venice under a false name to lodge with Juliana Bordereau, a very old woman who was the poet Jeffrey Aspern's mistress and is believed to keep his letters. He gets his rooms by offering an absurd rent, cultivates her plain niece, restores the garden, and waits for the old woman to weaken. Built from the story of Byron's papers and Claire Clairmont, it is the classic study of the literary scavenger.
