The Turn of the Screw

Henry James · 1898 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Victorian

A manuscript read out at Christmas: a parson's daughter takes her first post as governess to two orphans at a remote Essex house, on condition that she never trouble their uncle. She sees a man on the tower and a woman by the lake, learns who the dead valet and governess were, and becomes convinced the children see them too and will not say. The most argued-over ghost story in English, since the evidence for the ghosts is hers alone.
