The Sandman
Nathanael writes to his fiancée's brother about the lawyer who came to his father's room at night when he was a child, whom he took for the Sandman who tears out children's eyes, and who has reappeared in his university town selling barometers and pocket glasses. Through one of those glasses he watches the professor's silent daughter across the street until he can see nothing else. Freud took his account of the uncanny from this story, and Offenbach's opera and the ballet Coppélia are both built on its automaton.
