The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman

Angela Carter · 1972 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

A South American capital has been under attack for a year by images — mirages, dead relatives walking, buildings that will not stay put — all of it broadcast from the desire machines of a physicist who has abolished the difference between what is and what is wanted. The Minister of Determination sends a bored civil servant to find and kill him, and the errand runs through a river people who mean to eat him, a travelling fair, a coast of centaurs and a count out of Sade, with the doctor's daughter turning up at every stage in a different body. Angela Carter named her physicist for the German fantasist whose automata Freud used to define the uncanny, and wrote most of the book in Japan.
