The Story of the Amulet

E. Nesbit · 1906 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

Left in London lodgings while their parents are abroad, the four children recognise the Psammead in a pet shop window, buy it out of captivity, and are told where to find half of an ancient amulet that grants the heart's desire only when whole. The broken half stands up as an arch they can walk through into any time the other half existed: Egypt under the Pharaohs, Babylon, Atlantis on its last morning, Tyre, and Britain while Caesar is deciding whether to invade. It also opens on a clean socialist London of the future, which Nesbit the Fabian describes with a perfectly straight face.
